Fort de Brégançon: Heading for a mythical fort!
Located on the edge of the Mediterranean, in the territory of the commune of Bormes-les-Mimosas (Var), on the top of a rocky peak 35 meters above sea level and a few meters from the coast of Cap Bénat, the fort de Brégançon, is not only the favorite destination of French presidents, it is also a place steeped in history and mysteries.
The origins of the fort
In terms of history, the Brégançon fort was built in the 11th century. At that time, it was the property of the viscounts of Marseille. The lieutenants of the Count of Provence occupied it. In fact, the fort was not yet part of the French Republic. Later, the viscounts of Marseille sold the castle to the Community of Marseille. It was around 1257 that Brégançon entered the French kingdom, after the union of Béatrix of Provence and Charles. The first is the heir to the County. As for Charles, he is the Count of Anjou and at the same time the brother of Louis IX.
A presidential fort
Charles de Gaulle is the first president of the French Republic to have stayed at Fort Brégançon. On August 25, 1964, while he was traveling to Toulon to preside over the 20th anniversary of the landing in Provence, he had to find a residence to accommodate him, as hotels in the region were full during this summer period, which was quite busy with tourists. He is told that a military fortress, perhaps specially designed for the occasion: Fort Brégançon. It is the beginning of a long love story between French presidents and this legendary fort.
Fort visits
By decision of President Emmanuel Macron, the site is once again managed by the Presidency of the Republic. Renovation work and installation of an above-ground swimming pool are scheduled for summer 2018. For 2021, the fort is open to visitors from July 2 to 31 and September 3 to 28. Tours take place every day, except weekends. It is essential to book in advance with the Bormes les Mimosas Tourist Office.
