Environment: sailing in an eco-friendly way is possible!
Sailing by boat means setting sail towards unknown lands but also discovering the seabed during underwater escapades. But sailing also means opting for a more environmentally friendly means of transport, provided you respect the following rules! Focus!
Use your sails as much as possible!
If you have a sailboat with a motor, consider using it only as a last resort, for anchoring or maneuvering in the port for example. You have beautiful sails so use them!
Reduce speed on a motorboat
If you are sailing on a motorboat, remember to reduce your cruising speed as much as possible and only accelerate if necessary. Your speed should be approximately between 15 and 20 knots. By reducing your cruising speed you reduce your fuel consumption. Have your engine serviced regularly to limit pollution and comply with environmental standards.
Reduce your water consumption and use your environment!
Please note, we are not advising you to drink sea water here, but rather to use it as much as possible. When you sail you first have to make do with what the sea offers you. To rinse the deck of your boat for example, do not use fresh water, a salty sea bucket will do the trick. For equipment where you are required to use fresh water, remember to control your flow rate. Install a floor pump for your sink to regulate your water usage. For information, an electric pump produces 12 liters of water per minute.
Don’t throw anything into the ocean!
We advise you to only purchase foods with recyclable and more environmentally friendly packaging for your supply. If you are a smoker, remember that the ocean is not a trash can so remember to bring your own pocket ashtrays or throw them in your trash. If you are leaving for a long period, don’t panic, you will easily find bins for glasses or other items in the different marinas you come across.
Consider refueling at the port
Before each departure, remember to plan your fuel supplies. It is indeed very difficult to obtain supplies once at sea and you can quickly find yourself in a compromising situation. In addition, on certain small islands, the supply of fuel is expensive ecologically speaking.
Choose dead bodies for anchoring and for the environment
In order not to damage the ground, we recommend the use of moorings rather than the use of anchors. The use of moorings is mainly recommended for areas where marine soils are protected or in danger.
